Drum lessons in Turramurra

One on one drum lessons in Turramurra for children, teens and adults. Students learn solid stick technique, read drum notation and play the whole kit to the music they love.

What a drum lesson looks like

Stick techniqueGrip, wrist movement and rebound, so the sticks do the work and fast patterns stay relaxed. Good habits here protect hands and wrists as playing gets louder and quicker.
Rudiments and readingSingle strokes, doubles, paradiddles and flams, alongside reading drum notation. Students learn to read a groove off the page, not just copy it by ear.
The whole kitHands and feet working together across snare, toms, hi hat, cymbals and bass drum. Coordination builds one limb at a time until grooves and fills feel natural.
Playing to real songsRock, funk, pop, jazz or metal. Students play along to tracks they choose, which builds time feel and shows how the drummer holds a band together.

Both ISM studios are on the Pacific Highway in Turramurra, at Level 1, 1319 to 1321 Pacific Highway and Level 1, 1273 Pacific Highway (corner of Rohini Street), and we'll confirm which one your drum lessons are at when you book.

Drum teachers at ISM

Our drum teachers are performers who play across rock, funk, pop and jazz, and they make sure the basics are solid before moving on. We'll match the student with the teacher who fits their age and style.

Practising drums at home

Regular practice matters more on drums than almost any other instrument, because coordination only comes with repetition. Here are three ways families make it work.

Practice pad

A rubber pad and a pair of sticks are cheap and quiet, and cover most of what's needed for hands and rudiments. Most beginners can start with one.

Electronic kit

An electronic kit with headphones lets students practise full grooves without disturbing the household. It's a popular choice for families in apartments and townhouses.

Acoustic kit

An acoustic kit gives the real feel and sound. Practice mutes and a sensible practice time keep the neighbours on side.

Drummers who want to understand harmony as well as rhythm often add piano lessons or music theory later on.

Drum lesson questions

Do we need a drum kit at home to start?
Not straight away. Sticks and a practice pad are enough for the first stage, and the teacher sets pad work every week. Most students want a kit once they're playing grooves, and the teacher can talk you through the options.
Aren't drums too loud for home?
They don't have to be. An electronic kit with headphones is almost silent to the rest of the house, and practice pads are quieter still. Lots of drummers do most of their practice this way.
What should my child bring to a lesson?
A pair of sticks and the book or music the teacher gives them. Ear protection is a good idea for anyone playing an acoustic kit regularly.
Is there a minimum age for drum lessons?
Private lessons have no minimum age. Younger children do need to reach the pedals comfortably, and the teacher will tell you honestly at the free trial whether now is the right time.
Can drum lessons help with school band?
Yes. Reading drum parts, keeping steady time and listening to the rest of the band are all part of lessons, and they're the skills a school band needs from its drummer.

Is your child under seven? Our group classes build rhythm through percussion and movement from age three.

We’ve had such a wonderful experience with ISM Turramurra. Melika is an amazing teacher, kind, patient, encouraging, and incredibly engaging. Gabriel is always so excited to come to class because of her. She has such a wonderful way of connecting with him and making every lesson fun, enjoyable, and engaging. It’s lovely to see how much he looks forward to his music lessons each week. We really appreciate the care, patience, and enthusiasm Teacher Melika brings to every class. We’re so grateful to have her as Gabriel’s teacher and would highly recommend ISM Turramurra to other families looking for a positive and nurturing place for their children to learn music.

We’ve had a wonderful experience with the International School of Music Turramurra. My son has been attending piano classes here, and we’ve seen fantastic progress not just in his playing ability but also in his confidence and love for music. The teachers are highly skilled, patient, and encouraging, creating a supportive environment that keeps students motivated. The structured curriculum, combined with creative teaching methods, makes learning both effective and enjoyable. I would highly recommend this music school to any parent looking for quality music education for their child.

Best Sydney music school for children without doubt. We have an amazing teacher, with personal approach to each of the students during group classes, as well as running the group with excellent dynamics and attention to everyone. Great program, carefully created to keep kids interested and progress week by week. Sincere thanks for such a professional environment.
