About ISM Turramurra

The International School of Music Turramurra has taught music on Sydney's North Shore since 1992. We develop musicians, not technicians.

We develop musicians, not technicians

The International School of Music Turramurra has been teaching children music since it opened in January 1992. We run group music courses for children from three years old, and private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, violin, drums, bass guitar, woodwind (clarinet and saxophone), cello, double bass, trombone, composition, music theory and songwriting.

Our group courses start with Beeboppers for three year olds and carry on through the Junior Course, Primary Course, Intermediate Course and Extension Course. Classes run Monday to Sunday during the public school terms, and every course is structured so each student builds both the technical and the musical side of playing.

Children work with a wide range of music, from classical to rock'n'roll. Theory, listening, reading and composing are taught together rather than as separate subjects, so your child grows into a well rounded young musician, not someone who can only play the notes on the page. We also want learning music to be fun, and we plan our lessons around that.

Our approach
What you hear, you sing.
What you sing, you play.
What you play, you read.
What you read, you write.

How we teach

The ISM methodEvery lesson follows the same order: hear it, sing it, play it, read it, write it. Theory, listening, reading and composing are taught together rather than as separate subjects.
Our own booksEvery group course has its own ISM books and worksheets, written in house for that age, and private teachers use them where they suit the instrument.
Courses built for the ageFive group courses, from Beeboppers at three to the Extension Course from nine, each written for the age of the child in front of us.
Teachers trained in the systemOur teachers are qualified musicians trained in the ISM method, which keeps the teaching consistent from one class and one teacher to the next.
ConcertsStudents perform for family and friends at our concerts, which gives them real experience of playing for an audience.

Students who want exams can work towards them. See AMEB exam preparation.

Maps and contact details

What parents can expect

Safe, supervised studios

Students are only in our teaching rooms when a teacher is present.

Cameras and secure entry

There are security cameras in every room at both studios, and a secure entry system.

Working With Children Checks

Our teachers hold Working With Children Checks.

Two makeup lessons each term for private students

Every private student can have up to two makeup lessons per term, including for sickness, as long as the office hears from you at least 12 hours before the lesson starts, booked at a time their teacher has free. Group classes don't have makeups: the teacher sends the week's homework, and we'll try to fit your child into another class at the same level that week if there's space.

The student portal

Once enrolled, families can log in to the ISM student portal, and the office is a phone call or email away for anything else.

See us before you enrol

You can book a tour of the studios or sit in on an observation class before you enrol. Contact us to arrange a time.

The details of fees, missed lessons and notice are in our enrolment agreement, and common questions are answered in our FAQs.
