What a singing lesson looks like

Warm ups and breathingEvery lesson opens with a vocal warm up. Students learn to breathe low and steady and to support the sound, so the voice stays free and doesn't strain.
Finding the right rangeThe teacher listens for where the voice sits comfortably and where it can grow, then chooses keys and exercises that stretch it gently. Young voices are still changing, so nothing is forced.
Songs that suit the voiceMusical theatre, pop, folk, classical or the song from the school musical. Each song is picked for what it teaches as well as for how much the student wants to sing it.
Confidence and performanceSinging for one person comes first. Then stage presence and telling the story of a song, ready for an audience when the student wants one.

Singers learn at either of our Turramurra studios, head office at Level 1, 1319 to 1321 Pacific Highway or Studio 2 at Level 1, 1273 Pacific Highway (corner of Rohini Street), and the office will tell you which one when you book.

Who teaches singing at ISM

Our singing teachers are working performers, from choir and jazz ensemble singers to songwriters with their own releases. We'll pair the student with the teacher who best suits their voice and the music they love.

Beyond the lesson

Choirs, eisteddfods and the stage

Lots of young singers also sing in a school choir or take a part in the school production. Bring the music along and the teacher will help with the tricky lines, reading the vocal part and blending with the voices around you.

Preparing for an eisteddfod or an audition? Lessons turn to choosing the right piece, shaping it and practising it until it holds up under pressure. Our annual concert is a friendly first stage for students who want one.

Exams are optional

Exam preparation is available for students who want it. Your teacher will talk it through with you and only suggest an exam when it would help.

Singing questions from parents

How young can my child start singing lessons?
Private singing lessons have no minimum age. With younger children the teacher keeps exercises short and playful and never pushes the voice. For three year olds, singing is a big part of our Beeboppers group class, which can be a good first step.
My child is shy. Will singing lessons help?
Often, yes. A private lesson has no audience, just the student and a teacher who wants them to succeed. Confidence grows one song at a time, and nobody is asked to perform in public until they're ready.
Can you help with an audition or eisteddfod?
Yes. Tell the teacher what's coming up and they'll help choose a piece that shows the voice at its best, then rehearse it until it holds up under nerves.
Will my child learn to read music?
Yes. Singers learn to read a vocal line, follow rhythm and understand how a song is built. It makes learning new songs faster and helps a lot in choirs.
I'm an adult and I've never had a lesson. Is that OK?
Of course. Plenty of adults start singing lessons to sing in a choir, perform at an event or simply enjoy their own voice more. The teacher starts wherever you are.
Do singing students sit exams?
Only if they want to. Exam preparation is available for students who want it. See how exam preparation works at ISM.

Highly recommend. Siebe is a first class legend and is an excellent piano and bass player. The establishment is really good with colour coded doors so you know where your lesson is. Everyone here is beautiful and nice.
