Violin lessons in Turramurra

Patient, one on one violin lessons in Turramurra for children and adults. We start with posture, bow hold and a good sound, and go on to reading, ensembles and AMEB exams for those who want them.

What a violin lesson looks like

Posture and bow holdHow to stand, where the violin rests and a soft, rounded bow hand. Early lessons give these real time, because almost everything later depends on them.
A clear, steady soundStraight bowing, open strings, then fingers on the string one at a time. The teacher listens closely to tuning and tone and shows the student how to hear it too.
Reading musicNote names, rhythm and the treble clef come in step by step, so students can read their school strings part and learn new pieces on their own.
Pieces and scalesShort pieces the student enjoys, with scales and studies alongside. As skills grow, the program can follow the AMEB syllabus for students who want exams.

We teach at head office (Level 1, 1319 to 1321 Pacific Highway, Turramurra) and at Studio 2 (Level 1, 1273 Pacific Highway, corner of Rohini Street). When you book, we'll let you know which studio your violin lesson is at.

Our violin teachers

Between them, our violin teachers hold AMusA and LMusA diplomas and have played in some of Australia's leading youth orchestras. They teach beginners as carefully as advanced players.

Getting the size right Quarter, half, three quarter, full size Children play smaller violins and move up as they grow. Your teacher will tell you when it's time for the next size.

School strings and AMEB exams

Lots of young violinists also play in a school strings program or a youth orchestra. Private lessons give them the time a big rehearsal can't: tuning, shifting, bowing detail and learning their part properly before the next rehearsal.

For students who want a formal goal, the teacher can build lessons around the AMEB syllabus, from Preliminary through the grades. The office handles entries and emails dates and results to you. Students who'd rather just play are just as welcome.

Violin questions parents ask

What size violin does my child need?
Violins come in fractional sizes, such as quarter, half and three quarter, and the right one depends on the child's arm length. If you haven't bought or hired one yet, the teacher can advise on size at the free trial. A violin that's too big makes playing harder than it needs to be.
Should we buy or hire a violin?
Children move through sizes as they grow, so many families hire at first. Whichever you choose, ask for a properly set up instrument and bring it to the first lesson so the teacher can look it over.
Why does the bow hold get so much attention?
Because tone comes from the bow. A tight or awkward hold makes a scratchy sound and is hard to undo later. A few weeks spent on it at the start saves years of fixing.
My child plays in the school strings program. Can lessons help?
Yes. Bring the music along. Private lessons fill in the technique and reading that a big ensemble rehearsal doesn't have time for, and students usually feel more confident in their section as a result.
Do violin students sit AMEB exams?
They can, from Preliminary to Grade 8, though exams are always optional. Read about AMEB exam preparation at ISM.

Young children who aren't ready for an instrument yet often start in our group classes, or with piano lessons to build reading first.

Exceptional Violin Lessons, Highly Recommended! My kid (year 1) started a guitar class with Chris this Term 3, and even though it was his first time trying music, he’s absolutely loving it. Chris has a gentle, intuitive way of teaching that helps beginners feel confident and excited to learn. The lessons are fun, relaxed, and paced just right. My son looks forward to every class, highly recommend!

We are so pleased we discovered ISM. David was very welcoming and Ms Joy has reignited our teenage son's love for piano, after several previous teachers nearly put him off! ISM highly recommended as both personal and professional.
