What a piano lesson looks like

Reading and techniqueHand position, rhythm and note reading from the first lesson, so progress holds up as the pieces get harder.
Music the student lovesClassical, film and pop repertoire chosen with the student, using ISM's own books and worksheets.
Theory woven inTheory is taught through the pieces, not as a separate chore, with extra sessions before exams.
Concerts and exams when readyOur annual concert and AMEB exams, for the students who want them, never before they are ready.

Exams when the student is ready, never before

Many of our piano students sit AMEB exams each year. Your teacher will tell you when a grade is within reach, build the program around it and run mock exams in the weeks before. Students who would rather play for the love of it are just as welcome.

Piano questions parents ask

Do we need a piano at home?
A weighted key digital piano is enough to start. Our piano buying guide explains what matters and what to skip.
What age can my child start?
There is no set starting age. Book a free trial and the teacher will tell you honestly whether one on one lessons or a group class is the better fit right now.
How long should a lesson be?
Thirty minutes suits beginners and younger students. Move to 45 or 60 minutes once exams or more demanding repertoire come into it.
I'm an adult. Am I too old?
No. We teach adults from complete beginners to returning players, in daytime and evening slots.
Can my child sit AMEB piano exams?
Yes. Many of our piano students sit AMEB exams each year, from Preliminary to Grade 8. Your teacher will tell you when a grade is within reach. See how AMEB exams work at ISM.
