What a bass lesson looks like

Groove and timingThe bass sits with the drums and holds the band together. Students play along to a click and to tracks until notes land right in the pocket.
Plucking and fretting techniqueAlternating fingers or a pick, muting strings that shouldn't ring, and a fretting hand that moves around the neck without tension.
Tab, notation and chartsTab for learning songs quickly, then bass clef and chord charts, so a student can sit in with a band and follow the part in front of them.
How bass lines are builtRoots, fifths, octaves and walking lines. Knowing why a line works lets students write their own parts instead of only copying recordings.

Our two studios are both on the Pacific Highway in Turramurra: head office at Level 1, 1319 to 1321 Pacific Highway and Studio 2 at Level 1, 1273 Pacific Highway, corner of Rohini Street. We'll tell you which one your bass lessons are at when you book.

Who teaches bass guitar

Our bass teachers are songwriters, producers and working players, with backgrounds in jazz, rock and pop. We'll match the student with a teacher who suits their age and the music they want to play.

Moving over from guitar

Guitarists already know the fretboard, so the first weeks on bass go quickly. Lessons then focus on what's new: a heavier touch, longer stretches, muting, and thinking about rhythm first.

Getting ready to play in a band

Most people learn bass because they want to play with others. Lessons prepare for that from early on. Students practise with drum loops and backing tracks, learn the common song forms and get used to following a chord chart when there's no tab.

When a school band or a group of friends needs a bass player, the student will know how to count in, find the key, hold the groove and keep going through a mistake. Our drum lessons work on the same skills from the other side of the rhythm section.

Bass guitar questions

Is bass easier than guitar?
It's different rather than easier. There are fewer strings and usually one note at a time, so many beginners make quick progress. Playing with great timing and feel takes just as much practice as anything on guitar.
Can a beginner start on bass, or should they learn guitar first?
Bass is a perfectly good first instrument. Plenty of players start on it because they love the sound or want to join a band. Guitar first isn't necessary.
My child already plays guitar. Will that help?
Yes. The fretboard layout is the same on the bottom four strings, so a lot carries over. The bigger shift is thinking like a bass player: locking in with the drums, playing less and making every note count.
What equipment do we need?
A bass guitar at home to practise on, and a small practice amp or headphone amp. Short scale basses can suit younger players with smaller hands, and the teacher can advise at the trial.
Will lessons help my child join a band?
That's often the goal. Lessons cover reading charts, keeping steady time and learning songs quickly, which is what school bands and student bands look for in a bass player.

Prefer a bowed or acoustic bass? We also teach double bass and cello. For younger children, group classes and piano lessons build the reading and rhythm that bass draws on later.

Highly recommend. Siebe is a first class legend and is an excellent piano and bass player. The establishment is really good with colour coded doors so you know where your lesson is. Everyone here is beautiful and nice.

We’ve been really happy with Brianna’s piano lessons at ISM Turramurra. Siebe is a great teacher, patient, supportive, and really good at keeping Brianna engaged. He’s helped her build both her skills and a genuine love for music. The lessons are well-paced and enjoyable, and Brianna looks forward to them every week. Highly recommend ISM Turramurra for anyone looking to start or improve their piano playing!

Katherine Mawer, November 2024

My kid (year 1) started a guitar class with Chris this Term 3, and even though it was his first time trying music, he’s absolutely loving it. Chris has a gentle, intuitive way of teaching that helps beginners feel confident and excited to learn. The lessons are fun, relaxed, and paced just right. My son looks forward to every class, highly recommend!
