Guitar lessons in Turramurra

One on one guitar lessons in Turramurra for kids, teens and adults, on acoustic or electric. Students play chords and real songs early, with the reading and technique that keep them improving.

What a guitar lesson looks like

Chords and songs earlyFirst chord shapes and a simple strum, then a song the student already knows. Playing real music early is what keeps beginners picking the guitar up at home.
Technique that lastsA relaxed fretting hand, clean chord changes, picking and strumming patterns. Small fixes every week stop bad habits before they set in.
Tab and standard notationStudents read tab for songs and standard notation for everything else, so they can learn new music on their own and follow written parts.
Playing with other peopleDuets with the teacher build timing and listening. Students who want to can work towards school bands, ensembles and our annual concert.

ISM teaches from two studios in Turramurra: head office at Level 1, 1319 to 1321 Pacific Highway, and Studio 2 at Level 1, 1273 Pacific Highway, corner of Rohini Street. We'll confirm which one your guitar lessons are at when you book.

Your guitar teachers

Our guitar teachers are performing musicians with backgrounds in jazz, rock, pop and songwriting. We'll match you with one who suits the student's age and the music they want to play.

Meet the whole team

Before your first lesson

A few things parents and adult beginners usually ask about before starting guitar.

Acoustic or electric?

Either is a good place to start. An acoustic guitar is simple to pick up and play anywhere. An electric has lighter strings that are kinder to young fingers, but needs an amp. Tell us what music the student loves and the teacher will help you choose.

What to bring

Bring the guitar you practise on, so the teacher can check its tuning and setup. Add a few picks, a folder for the music you're given and a tuner app on your phone. Electric players can check with us when they book whether to bring a lead and amp.

Adult beginners

Adults are welcome, whether you're starting from scratch or picking up a guitar you haven't touched since school. Lessons go at your pace and are built around the songs you've always wanted to play.

Guitar questions we hear most

What age can my child start guitar?
There's no minimum age for private lessons. The real question is whether small hands can reach the strings comfortably, which is why half and three quarter size guitars exist. The teacher will give you an honest view at the free trial. Some younger children start in our group classes and move to private lessons later.
Which guitar should we buy?
If you don't have one yet, mention it when you book your trial. The teacher can then suggest a size and type that suits the student's age and the music they like. You'll need a guitar at home once lessons begin, because most progress happens in practice between lessons.
How much should my child practise?
Little and often works best. For most beginners, ten to fifteen minutes on most days does more than one long session the night before a lesson. The teacher sets clear goals each week so practice time isn't wasted.
My fingertips are sore. Is that normal?
Yes, for the first few weeks. The skin on the fretting hand toughens with short, regular practice and the soreness passes. If it doesn't, the teacher will check the guitar, because strings sitting high above the neck make playing harder than it should be.
Can guitar students sit AMEB exams?
Yes, if they want a formal goal. The teacher will explain the syllabus options and tell you when a grade is within reach. Read more about AMEB exam preparation at ISM.

My kid (year 1) started a guitar class with Chris this Term 3, and even though it was his first time trying music, he’s absolutely loving it. Chris has a gentle, intuitive way of teaching that helps beginners feel confident and excited to learn. The lessons are fun, relaxed, and paced just right. My son looks forward to every class, highly recommend!

Best Sydney music school for children without doubt. We have an amazing teacher, with personal approach to each of the students during group classes, as well as running the group with excellent dynamics and attention to everyone. Great program, carefully created to keep kids interested and progress week by week. Sincere thanks for such a professional environment.

ISM Turramurra is a wonderful place for children to learn piano. The lesson structure is very well designed, and the teaching approach is both engaging and effective. Teacher Rosie are patient, friendly, and encouraging, which makes my son feel comfortable and motivated to learn. We have had a very positive experience here and would highly recommend ISM Turramurra to other families.
