AMEB Exam Success: A Guide for Parents and Students in Sydney

AMEB exams can feel like a big mountain to climb. With the right preparation and a supportive teacher, they can be a rewarding experience for students and parents alike. ISM Turramurra has taught music in Turramurra since 1992, and these are the AMEB tips we share with every family.

1. What are AMEB exams?

The Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) sets a structured framework for learning music, with grades that build technical, theory and performance skills step by step.

For parents, exams give a clear measure of progress. For students, they give clear goals to work towards. The grades run from Preliminary through to Grade 8, and on to diplomas after that.

At ISM Turramurra, AMEB preparation is part of our private lessons in piano, guitar, singing and our other instruments, with teaching pitched to each student’s age and level.

2. Choosing the right grade

Should your child start with Preliminary, Grade 1 or something higher? It depends on their current skills, age and goals.

We look at each student individually. Some are ready for their first AMEB exam after a year of private lessons, while others need more time to build confidence. It isn’t a race, and setting realistic expectations makes for a much better experience.

Talk to your child’s teacher. They’ll have the best sense of when your child is ready and can help you plan a timeline. If you’re still unsure, give us a call and we’ll help.

3. Practice, practice, practice

Practice isn’t always the most exciting part of learning an instrument, but it’s what makes the difference in an exam. The good news is that it doesn’t need to take hours every day.

We recommend short, focused practice sessions. A daily routine of 20 to 30 minutes works far better than one long session the night before a lesson. Break practice into parts: scales, technical work and pieces. Don’t forget sight reading and aural skills, as both are part of AMEB exams.

Parents, your role here matters. Encourage, keep things positive and celebrate small wins. A favourite snack after practice never hurts.

4. Managing nerves

Playing in front of an examiner can make anyone nervous. Performance nerves are normal, and they can be managed.

We hold concerts so our students get real experience performing in front of an audience, which is great preparation for an exam.

Encourage your child to play for family and friends at home and keep it fun. The more they perform, the more confident they’ll become. Remind them that even professional musicians get nervous.

5. Knowing the exam requirements

Each AMEB grade has set requirements, from technical work and pieces to aural tests and sight reading.

Our teachers choose repertoire that shows off each student’s strengths while meeting the syllabus, and give clear guidance on technical work and theory so preparation is well rounded.

6. The role of your teacher

Your teacher is your biggest ally. At ISM Turramurra our teachers guide, motivate and support students all the way to the exam.

Our teaching follows a simple principle: what you hear, you sing; what you sing, you play; what you play, you read; what you read, you write. This builds both technical skill and musicianship, which is exactly what examiners listen for.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Our teachers are always happy to update you on your child’s progress and suggest ways to help with practice at home.

7. Preparing for exam day

A little planning makes exam day much calmer:

• Arrive early. Give yourself time to find the venue and settle in.
• Bring everything. Music books, the exam slip and any paperwork.
• Stay calm. Remind your child to take a few deep breaths and enjoy the experience.

Our teachers also run through the exam format in lessons beforehand so students know what to expect.

Whether your child passes with flying colours or simply gives it their best, every AMEB exam is a milestone worth celebrating. Success is as much about the effort and growth along the way as the result.
