Group vs Private Music Lessons: Which Is Right for Your Child?

One of the first questions parents ask is whether their child should start with group classes or private lessons. Both have real benefits, and the right choice depends on your child’s personality, goals and learning style. ISM Turramurra has been helping families make this decision since 1992, and here’s how we think about it.

1. Neither is better, just different

In group classes, your child learns alongside other children, which builds teamwork, rhythm and a sense of belonging. Private lessons give one on one attention and a program built around your child.

We offer both because every child is different. Some thrive in a lively classroom, others do best with a teacher to themselves.

2. What group classes do well

Group classes are a place where young musicians learn, laugh and grow together. For younger children, such as those in our Junior Course (4 to 6 years), this can be especially valuable.

Learning with others creates a collaborative atmosphere where children encourage each other. Group classes also include ensemble playing, which teaches timing, listening and the joy of making music as part of a team.

Our group courses are grouped by age and level, so every child feels included and engaged.

3. What private lessons do well

Private lessons are all about personalisation. Whether your child is learning piano, violin, guitar, singing or another instrument, the teacher can shape every minute around their strengths, weaknesses and goals.

Private lessons suit children who are shy in groups, or who are keen to push ahead on their instrument. With one on one attention, every minute goes to your child’s progress.

Our private lessons start from 30 minutes, with longer lessons available. There’s no minimum age for private lessons.

4. Age

Age often plays a part. Younger children, especially those aged 3 to 6, tend to thrive in group settings, where a playful, interactive environment keeps them engaged.

Older children and teenagers often get a lot out of private lessons, as they usually have a clearer idea of what they want to achieve, whether it’s a particular piece or an AMEB exam.

We offer group courses from Beeboppers for 3 year olds through to the Extension Course from 9, and private lessons on a wide range of instruments, so there’s an option for every stage.

5. Personality

Is your child a social butterfly or a quieter learner who prefers individual attention? Understanding their personality helps.

Outgoing children often love the energy of a group and find learning alongside others motivating. Quieter children may find groups overwhelming at first and do better with the focus of a private lesson.

Our teachers create a supportive environment either way.

6. The good kind of peer pressure

Group classes come with a bonus: positive peer motivation. When children see classmates master a piece or nail a rhythm, it often motivates them to do the same.

That gentle push can be very helpful for younger students. It encourages them to practise, pay attention and keep improving, and it’s more fun to celebrate achievements with friends.

7. The flexibility of private lessons

Private lessons can be scheduled at a time that suits your family, and they can focus on specific goals. Preparing for a school concert or an AMEB exam piece? A private teacher can adapt each lesson to fit.

We’re open 7 days, with private lessons in piano, guitar, singing, violin, drums, bass guitar, woodwind and more, so it’s easy to fit music into a busy week.

8. Cost

Group classes generally cost less than private lessons, and they give excellent value: a structured program plus the benefits of learning with others.

Private lessons cost more, but offer a fully personalised program. For students with specific goals or older children keen to progress quickly, they’re often worth it.

Talk to us about your goals and we’ll help you choose the option that suits your family.

9. Why not both?

You don’t have to choose just one. Many students benefit from a mix. A common path is to start in group classes to build the foundations, then move to private lessons as they advance. Others do both at the same time.

We’re happy to help you put together a plan that suits your child.
