Music Lesson Costs in Sydney: What Affects the Price and How to Compare

Looking for music lessons in Sydney but unsure what to expect on cost? You’re not alone. Understanding what goes into the price of lessons helps you make the best choice for your child. This guide explains what affects cost and how to compare schools fairly.

Group classes and private lessons

The biggest factor in cost is the type of lesson.

Group classes usually cost less per lesson than private lessons. For young beginners they’re an excellent introduction to music:

  • A structured program designed for their age
  • Singing, rhythm work and piano basics
  • Learning alongside other children
  • A clear path from one course to the next

At ISM Turramurra our group courses start with Beeboppers for 3 year olds, and most classes run for 45 minutes (60 minutes for the Extension Course).

Private lessons cost more, because your child has the teacher’s full attention for the whole lesson. They’re tailored to the student’s pace and goals. At ISM, private lessons start from 30 minutes, with longer lessons available, and there’s no minimum age.

What affects the cost of lessons?

1. Lesson format

  • Group or private
  • How long each lesson runs
  • How many lessons are in a term

2. Teacher qualifications and experience

  • Formal music qualifications
  • Teaching experience
  • Ongoing training

3. The school itself

  • Rooms set up for music teaching
  • Quality of the instruments in the room
  • Location and how easy it is to get to

4. Other costs to plan for

  • Books and materials
  • Exam fees, if your child sits AMEB exams (optional)
  • Concert participation
  • Buying or hiring an instrument for home practice

How to compare schools

Lesson prices are only useful if you compare like with like. When you look at different schools, check:

  • The length of each lesson. A 30 minute lesson and a 45 minute lesson aren’t the same thing.
  • How many lessons are in a term, and whether you’re paying per lesson or per term.
  • What’s included, such as books, materials or the use of instruments in class.
  • Payment terms, including when fees are due and any late fees.
  • The makeup lesson policy if your child misses a lesson.
  • The notice period if you decide to stop.
  • Discounts for siblings, friends or family.

Getting the best value

  • Ask about friend, family and sibling discounts.
  • Encourage regular practice at home. Steady practice makes every lesson count.
  • Start with a free trial so you know the school is right before you commit.

Look beyond the price

Price matters, but it isn’t everything. Also think about:

  • The quality of the teaching
  • The teacher’s experience
  • How the program is structured
  • How convenient the location is
  • How the school communicates with families
